CAMPAIGN
Each year The Jersey Women's Refuge is involved in an awareness campaign about domestic violence and it's presence in our community.
Why?
There can often be an unspoken belief that violence in the home does not happen here. This belief causes those who do suffer from domestic violence to hide their pain from family and friends in shame and embarrassment. This only enables the problem to be surrounded in stigma; it prevents women from breaking their silence and asking for help.
We aim to raise awareness about this problem within our community and send out the message that domestic violence is unacceptable and intolerable so the stigma for victims of this hidden crime can then be lifted. We also aim to let every woman suffering in silence know that confidential help is always available to them.
-
1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their life time, regardless of nationality, age, race or economic status.
-
10% of women experience domestic violence each year.
Many of us will know or have either a mother, a sister, a daughter, a female colleague, a female friend or neighbour. If you consider domestic violence is often a hidden crime and take onboard the above statistics, this highlights how domestic violence will have an impact on many of us.
