Every year, the Jersey Domestic Violence Forum in conjunction with the States of Jersey Police and Jersey Women’s Refuge, design and launch a domestic abuse awareness campaign.
-
In 2009 our campaign was called ‘behind closed doors’- you may have seen our stickers on the back of public toilets, locker-rooms or shop doors.
-
In 2010 we have chosen to emulate the incredibly successful UK ‘REAL MAN’ campaign as designed by Women’s Aid UK for more details about this organisation go to our links page.
-
Using local Celebs, we will create posters and banners that will appear all over the Island during the week of the campaign which is launched to coincide with National Domestic Violence Week on the 22nd of November 2010.
-
During this week, there will be a manifesto available for male members of the public to sign to show their support for the campaign and acknowledge that real men do not abuse and control women – physically, emotionally, sexually or financially.
By signing the manifesto, they will be agreeing that:
-
A REAL MAN doesn’t hit, abuse or control others
-
A REAL MAN doesn’t hurt the ones he loves
-
A REAL MAN makes a difference
-
I’m a REAL MAN making a difference by standing up to support this awareness campaign that aims to end domestic violence within my community
THere is also a section for women to sign to show their support of this campaign.
-
This manifesto will be available in Voisins Department Store who are showing their support for the campaign by organising a fashion show to kick-start the campaign…
-
‘BE A REAL MAN’ T-shirts for men and ‘LOVE A REAL MAN’ T-shirts for women were on sale at the fashion show, and now on sale for £10.00, if you would like to purchase one, contact us.
-
The campaign itself was launched on the evening of Monday 22nd of November 2010 @ the Opera House.
Lorna Kearney, manager of the Jersey Women’s Refuge, says:
"We are delighted to be able to hold our 'REAL MAN' photo shoot at Voisins Fashion Show in preparation for our campaign in November (2010). We would like to thank all our local male celebrities, the Langtry Club and Voisins for agreeing to take part and give their time and support to our campaign. All men who attend the fashion show are invited to get involved and have their photo taken in our 'REAL MAN' T-shirts and in doing so show that they agree 'Real Men' would never be abusive or violent towards a partner. The Forum wants to involve men to support our work and this campaign to end violence against women and children".
